Overview

Since 1922, Sigma Xi's Grants in Aid of Research program has funded undergraduate and graduate students' hands-on scientific research across all science and engineering fields. Grants pay for specific equipment and travel to and from a research site for a defined project. U.S. citizenship and residence are explicitly NOT required — international applications are welcome — and membership is not required to apply (though members access higher award caps).

Why it is notable: a century-old, genuinely global small-grants program for student researchers with two deadlines a year, no citizenship bar, and no requirement to be a Sigma Xi member — most students have never heard of it.
Funding at a glance

What it covers

  • Purchase of specific equipment necessary to undertake the proposed research project.

  • Not covered: tuition, general living expenses, salaries.
