Overview

Chile's national research agency funds full doctoral studies at any accredited Chilean university — for Chilean AND foreign applicants alike, with no residency requirement. It covers tuition, a monthly living allowance, health coverage and child supplements for up to four years, in every field of knowledge.

Why it is notable: unlike most "national" scholarships, foreign nationals may apply with or without permanent residence in Chile ("con o sin permanencia definitiva en Chile") — you can apply while still formally in the admission process to the PhD programme, not only once enrolled.
Funding at a glance

What it covers

  • Monthly living allowance (manutención) up to CLP $7,880,000/year, paid in monthly instalments (2027-call figure per Chilean press; official portal prior-call figure $7,800,000).

  • Health coverage (asignación por cobertura de salud) up to CLP $407,880/year.
  • Supplement per child under 18 equal to 5% of the fellow's monthly maintenance.
  • Possible extension of the maintenance benefit for up to 6 months for writing the doctoral thesis.
  • Pre/post-natal extension of the maintenance allowance up to 6 months total.
  • On budget availability and evaluation, complementary benefits: thesis operational expenses, doctoral internships, and cotutelle stays abroad (per UFRO/ANID announcement).
